The RSO was incorporated in 1943 after performing for the community for nine seasons under its first Music Director and Manager, Arthur Zack. Zack led the orchestra for twenty-seven years. In 1970, the Board of Directors appointed Crawford Gates its next music director, bringing renowned guest artists to perform with the orchestra including Van Cliburn (1972), Victor Borge (1973), Phyllis Diller (1974), and Benny Goodman (1975). In 1991, the Board named Steven Larsen as the RSO’s fourth music director. Described as a “Renaissance musician,” Larsen went to work and over the last seventeen years has expanded the orchestra’s repertoire, attracting musicians of the highest caliber. Youth education and community outreach programs have expanded, increasing the RSO’s presence in the lives of Rockford area residents. During his tenure, Larsen added a pops series, an outdoor summer performance series and a fully-staged opera to the Symphony’s concert rosters. He has endeavored to bring the RSO’s performances to wider audiences by performing in new and non-traditional venues. His accomplishments have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Illinois Council of Orchestras’ 2006 Conductor of the Year and a 1999 Mayor’s Arts Award for individual achievement. Under Larsen’s artistic leadership, the orchestra continues to develop the audiences of tomorrow through the RSO’s Youth Concerts and KinderKonzert programs, and through a wide variety of other educational programs involving the entire Rockford community. Overall, the Rockford Symphony’s mission is to enlighten, educate and entertain the people of Northern Illinois through symphonic music performance of the highest artistic excellence.

Do you remember your first sip of coffee? Chances are you either had a great experience, or you pursed your lips and wondered ‘how can adults drink this?’ When I was in college I would carry my own coffee creamer around in my backpack. I carried it around so that I could tolerate the taste of university java. I would pour some into my cup, and then other’s cups as well. I did not know it at the time, but I was building community. A space where conversations took place, stories shared, testimony’s heard. All centered around, coffee. Cafè Amorè was created between my shifts as a police officer. My appreciation for coffee has grown exponentially through the police academy, working nights, and mommying to my joy filled little human I get to call, my son. Like Jesus, coffee has provided me a safe place to go when I need a break, or a boost of energy to drive my purpose.  Cafè Amorè will be collaborating with local non-profit agencies to provide survivors of trauma, domestic violence, and substance abuse a chance to work voluntarily to gain work experience. As a police officer, I have had many interactions with survivors of such. It would be ignorant of myself to believe the interactions alone, would be enough to motivate survivors to rebuild their lives with positive relationships, and begin anew. It simply does not work that way. It takes time and consistency, as many survivors of trauma or addiction relapse to their previous lifestyles within the first year. Cafè Amorè is more than a place of employment that serves phenomenal lattès. It is a place where everyone has a seat at the table.That’s the purpose of Cafè Amorè. A safe haven where community is built on principles of: self-love, healing, authenticity, and rebuilding. So many of us have survived strongholds on our lives that have left us feeling defeated, unloved, or invaluable. The reality is, you, are welcome at Cafè Amorè. Together we will grow sipping one lattè at a time.

The founding members of EAA Chapter 22 were: Frank Murray, Joe Kirk, Lynn Stevenson, Ken Long, Hendley Hall, Mel Jacobeson, Bud Harwood, Ken Casson, Bob Richardson, Ed Livingston and Roy Malm. EAA Chapter 22 was started with a meeting in Cottonwood FBO owner Frank Murray's office sometime in 1956. Frank Murray was elected the first president and ran the organization until he resigned due to ill health.The first issue of "TOUCH & GO" (EAA Chapter 22's monthly newsletter) was published in 1964 with Peter MacKay as the editor. Stronghold Center is a four-season retreat and camping center, operated by the Presbytery of Blackhawk, Presbyterian Church (USA). Our facilities include wilderness cabins, a camping area, dining and meeting rooms, and seven retreat houses able to accommodate 6-56 guests. Located in Oregon, IL, the beauty of nature exists in a variety of environments, all along bluffs overlooking the Rock River. Founded in 1963, Stronghold Center proudly continues to provide a variety of Christian and secular programming and events. Kortman Center for Design and The Kortman Gallery, founded in 1986 by Doc Slafkosky and Jerry Kortman, are located in an historic Barloga building at 107 North Main Street in Downtown Rockford, Illinois USA. The store, located on the first floor, presents intriguing objects from around the world with an emphasis on great design. Alessi of Italy is one of the featured lines, along with art glass, jewelry, toys, folk art...and other fascinating home accessories. Our museum campus has an assortment of historical buildings. The queen of the campus is the Waukesha Hangar, a reclaimed 1937 airplane hangar which houses our unique museum. Outside you can also visit our historic Slim's Garage, "fill up" at our historic Sunoco Gas Station, or just take in the beauty of our pastoral landscape while experiencing the thrill of airplanes taking off nearby. The Poplar Grove Vintage Wings and Wheels Museum is a great place to visit again and again for new exhibits and events throughout the year.
